This year, Cirrus marked an incredible milestone: the 10,000th delivery of its SR Series — a Limited-Edition aircraft designed to celebrate a legacy of innovation, safety and craftsmanship. This one-of-a-kind model honors the journey that Cirrus owners and the SR Series have taken together, reshaping personal aviation since the aircraft first debuted in 1999. From pioneering safety advancements to bold new design elements, the SR Series has come to symbolize excellence in single-engine aviation.

Let’s take a closer look at the inspiration, design and detail behind the Limited Edition 10,000th SR Series — a model crafted to reflect not only Cirrus’ accomplishments but the commitment to the journey ahead.

Two Years in the Making: The Vision Behind the 10,000th SR Series

sr series 10000

The design process for the 10,000th SR Series began two years before the final reveal. For this milestone, Cirrus’ Xi Design Program Lead, Brad Kappel, and his team set out to create something more than an aircraft; they wanted to pay tribute to the SR Series legacy. “Before we put pen to paper, we asked ourselves what makes a milestone? What makes one that reaches 10,000 so special?” Kappel shared. “The 10,000th SR Series represents more than just Cirrus’ success. It represents the essence of general aviation — a supercar for the skies, a celebration of our achievements and a new chapter of the SR Series story.”

The design team took inspiration from luxury automotive brands to create an aesthetic that is both refined and timeless. The exterior features a custom matte white paint with a blue pearl effect — a finish that is new to the SR Series. Inside, the interior palette includes sleek silver hues and matte carbon fiber accents, another first, designed to add contrast and create a sense of lightness within the cabin.

The matte carbon fiber elements are meticulously book-matched, ensuring a seamless and symmetrical appearance that enhances the cabin’s sophisticated design. This premium material is strategically placed throughout the interior, showcasing a combination of style and functionality. The avionics area is framed in matte carbon fiber while the waterline trim adds a polished edge to the cabin’s profile.

Other carbon fiber details include the bezel around the GTC, the closeout for the armrest and the trim around the throttle. Even the cupholders and doorsill badges feature this luxurious all-new touch, tying together the interior’s modern and dynamic feel.

“Our goal was to design an aircraft that felt both bold and elegant — a statement piece that would stand the test of time,” Kappel explained. The resulting aircraft captures the spirit of the SR Series as it moves into its next phase, maintaining the character and innovation that our owners know and love.”

A Museum-Worthy Design: Crafting the Details

Every detail on the 10,000th SR Series was considered with precision. The exterior design features a glossy “X” pattern over the matte paint, which subtly appears in certain light conditions to reveal the unique aesthetic on the tail. These design details required careful craftsmanship, challenging the limits of the Cirrus Paint and Detail team. The designers chose an approach that felt intentional, allowing the iconic Cirrus silhouette to shine without being overtly flashy.

This milestone model passed through the Cirrus assembly line like every other aircraft, hand-crafted by a team whose pride in the SR Series shows in every detail. The outcome? An aircraft that embodies our commitment to our owners.

The 10,000th SR Series model showcases a distinctive design inspired by forward-moving lines, symbolizing Cirrus’ ongoing commitment to progress and innovation.

Customization at its Finest: The Cirrus Xi Design Program

Though the 10,000th SR Series model is one-of-a-kind, Cirrus offers owners a similar opportunity to create their own bespoke aircraft through our Xi Design Program. With an extensive range of customization options, owners can select paint colors, leather combinations and personal touches, making each SR Series or Vision Jet truly theirs.

The customization experience at Cirrus is about more than colors and finishes. Cirrus invites each owner to the Vision Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, where they collaborate with the Design team in a process that is as personal as it is creative. From a favorite supercar color matched to the aircraft’s exterior paint to custom graphics inspired by a wedding location, each design reflects the owner’s personal story.

After the aircraft is built, owners return to Knoxville for a celebration that includes music and a spectacular light show unveiling their new, customized aircraft.

“No design, moment or delivery is ever the same – and that fills us with such great pride. We adore owners that lean into the experience with us and find joy in being part of the exclusive Xi Design family. Owners find each other and take their Cirrus experience into the world with our Cirrus Adventure Series, unlocking memories in packs and the beautiful images sent to us are equally unforgettable for our team.” Design Supervisor Brad Kappel shared.

Welcome back to our blog series dedicated to exploring exciting new features the SR Series G7 has to offer. In our last blog, we explored the first-class comfort and convenience that the G7 offers. From more legroom for both pilots to accent lighting and thoughtful storage solutions, the SR Series G7 redefines what it means to fly in luxury and style.

Now, let’s shift our focus to the state-of-the-art safety features that make the SR Series G7 a leader in personal aviation.

Cirrus Airframe Parachute System® (CAPS®)

plane with a parachute

At the heart of Cirrus commitment to safety is the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System® (CAPS®). This revolutionary safety feature is designed to protect the pilot and passengers in the event of an emergency by deploying a parachute that brings the entire aircraft safely to the ground. CAPS® has saved over  250 lives and continues to be a cornerstone of Cirrus safety philosophy.

Aircraft Protection

The SR Series G7 introduces several new features that enhance flight safety. The first-in-class stick shaker provides an immediate tactile cue to the pilot when the aircraft is nearing a stall, supplementing visual and audible warnings. This crucial feature aids in maintaining control and preventing stalls.

cirrus flap controls

Additionally, the flap airspeed protection system ensures that flaps are only extended or retracted within safe speed ranges. This intelligent safeguard prevents flaps from deploying at excessive speeds and keeps them from retracting during critical flight phases when speeds are too low, thereby promoting a safer flying experience.

Hypoxia Detection & Auto Descent

The G7’s advanced avionics are designed to safeguard you during flights at higher altitudes.

Here’s how it works:

  1. System Activation: The safety system arms when you reach an altitude of 14,900 feet. From that point, the avionics monitor your interactions.
  2. Inactivity Alert: If there is no activity for a certain period, the system issues a white advisory CAS (Crew Alerting System) message.
  3. Hypoxia Warning: If you don’t respond within 60 seconds, the system escalates to a yellow caution hypoxia warning.
  4. Auto Descent Warning: If there’s still no response after another 60 seconds, a red warning CAS message appears, accompanied by repeating double chimes. This indicates that automatic descent to 14,000 feet will begin in 60 seconds.
  5. Emergency Descent Mode (EDM): If there’s no interaction, the system activates EDM and starts descending the aircraft.
  6. Descent Process: The aircraft will descend to 14,000 feet and wait for your input. If there’s no interaction within 60 seconds, it will continue descending to 12,500 feet, where it will remain until the autopilot is disengaged.

The primary goal of this system is to take control if you become incapacitated, guiding the aircraft to an altitude where you can recover and evaluate the situation.

Cuffed Wing Design

cirrus cuffed wings

In collaboration with NASA, the SR Series features a cuffed wing design with a discontinuous leading edge. This innovative feature greatly reduces the likelihood of spin entry during an inadvertent stall, offering pilots an added layer of safety. The cuffed wing makes the aircraft more forgiving and easier to manage, especially in critical flight conditions.

Electronic Stability and Protection

Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP), a safeguard designed to assist pilots in maintaining safe, stable flight. This intuitive system continuously monitors the aircraft’s flight condition and functions independently of the autopilot, providing an extra layer of protection.

How ESP Works:

Maintaining Stability: ESP is always on alert, ready to step in if the aircraft’s pitch or roll exceeds recommended limits. If you inadvertently enter a steep climb, descent, or bank angle, ESP applies a gentle control force to nudge the aircraft back toward a more stable flight path, helping to prevent loss of control.

Autopilot Engagement for Extended Deviations: If ESP is activated for an extended period, it automatically engages the autopilot with the flight director in level mode. This feature is crucial for situations where the pilot might be disoriented or distracted, as it brings the aircraft back to level flight without any input from the pilot.

Flexibility for Training: Understanding that pilots need to practice and train, ESP can be manually disabled, allowing for intentional flight maneuvers. This flexibility ensures that while ESP is a powerful safety tool, it doesn’t interfere with necessary training activities.

Cirrus Training

At Cirrus, safety isn’t just built into our aircraft—it’s ingrained in every aspect of our pilot training programs. We believe in creating competent and safe pilots, and we achieve this through both online and in-person flight training solutions designed by the very experts who engineered one of the safest aircraft in the aviation industry.

First delivered in 1999, the SR Series redefined general aviation and became the best-selling high-performance single-engine piston aircraft in general aviation. With the launch of the SR Series G7, Cirrus focused on creating a more approachable aircraft and flight deck to invite more people to experience personal aviation.

“The new SR Series G7 is a testament to our mission and design philosophy of innovation, quality and safety,” said Zean Nielsen, Chief Executive Officer of Cirrus. “Our team and our aircraft provide a clear path to enter and advance within the personal aviation community by streamlining learning how to fly and transitioning to the Vision Jet with ease.”

The Cirrus team thoughtfully selected the Perspective Touch+ flight deck powered by Garmin because it offers familiar touchscreen interfaces, reduces pilot workload and enhances situational awareness. The Cirrus SR Series G7 Perspective Touch+ invites people to experience a new way of personal travel.

Design Philosophy Cirrus Perspective Touch+™

In the mid-1990s, Cirrus revolutionized the aviation industry by introducing a 10-inch multi-function display in the SR20. Not long after, the SR Series became the first to feature a complete glass cockpit incorporating the primary flight display that other manufacturers soon adopted as an industry standard. This pioneering spirit continues with the SR Series G7 and integrating the Cirrus Perspective Touch+, which boasts two dual 14-inch high-resolution displays and touch controllers providing unprecedented clarity and functionality ultimately transforming the flight deck into a state-of-the-art command center.

Ivy McIver, Executive Director of the SR Series Product Line of Cirrus, said that the philosophy for moving toward an all-touchscreen flight deck was reminiscent and empowering:

“I compare it to looking at the space shuttle back in the 80s. I remember looking at the flight deck of the space shuttle and thinking – I could never be an astronaut; it looks so complicated. Fast forward to May 2020 and the launch of the Crew Dragon shuttle – the flight deck looked so clean and simple with modern touchscreen avionics. It seemed approachable and made me think for a moment that maybe I could be an astronaut. We wanted the G7 to invoke those same feelings.”

Key Features of Cirrus Perspective Touch+™

SurfaceWatch:

Before the SR Series G7 takes you up to 25,000 feet, you need to get off the ground safely.

With SafeWatch, monitor your aircraft’s location and receive visual and audio alerts to prevent taking off or landing on the wrong runway, or a runway that is too short. SafeWatch also displays the remaining runway length, significantly enhancing pilot situational awareness.

Taxiway Routing & 3D SafeTaxi:

Taxiway Routing and 3D SafeTaxi are powerful features that complement each other.

Taxiway Routing ensures confident and safe taxiing while 3D SafeTaxi provides a detailed view of the airport environment. Combined, these features help navigate even the most complex airports. Enter a taxi clearance with ease and follow it with clearly displayed progressive instructions on the map in 3D to highlight hangars, terminals, taxiways, aprons, signs and other markings.

Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT)

Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT) received a big update with the launch of the SR Series G7. Pilots enjoy a clear digital view during all phases of flight to improve safety regardless of the conditions or time of day.

Displaying a 3D virtual image of the ground, water, obstacles and new features like airport identifiers, that start 25 miles out and initially show in 4NM intervals, and as the runway gets closer, they will appear every 2NM intervals and then 1NM intervals, making approaches easier as well as having one less thing to worry about when you hear the classic “report 5 mile final.”

Scroll Wheel, CAS-Linked Checklists & Messaging

Checklist Scroll Wheel:

The Checklist Scroll Wheel and CAS-Linked Checklists further enhance pilot efficiency and safety.

The scroll wheel, a feature adopted from the Vision Jet, allows pilots to navigate through checklists with ease. While CAS-Linked Checklists automatically display relevant checklists based on system alerts and notifications.

Together, these features ensure that the pilot has immediate access to critical procedures when needed, eliminating the need for intensive searching.

CAS-Linked Messaging

With CAS Message Linking, the system automatically nominates a checklist based on activation of a crew alerting message. This feature links a Crew Alerting System (CAS) message with the applicable checklist, providing a new group dedicated to CAS-linked checklists. When a CAS message is active, the CAS Linking feature uses that group to list the checklist linked to the message. The flight crew has the option to disregard the nominated checklists and access other checklist groups if required, making CAS linking more efficient than searching through a full set of lists.

Garmin Touchscreen Controller

The Garmin Touchscreen Controllers in the Perspective Touch+™ system set a new standard for ease of use and pilot convenience.

These controllers feature responsive, icon-based “touch keys” that provide quick access to essential functions such as flight planning, mapping, procedures, audio controls and synoptics. The touchscreen interface is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly, even in high-workload situations, allowing pilots to manage complex tasks with a few simple touches. The integration of these controllers with the Perspective Touch+ flight deck supports precise piloting and decision-making, ensuring a seamless and integrated flying experience. With features like gesture control and customizable layouts, the Garmin Touchscreen Controllers offer pilots a highly adaptable and efficient tool for managing the flight deck.

Large Widescreen Displays

Now available in 12 or 14-inch displays, the pilot gains spilt-screen capabilities and can present up to three separate windows of critical information while flying. View an approach chart, engine parameters and navigational map on one stunning screen. The improved display quality and larger size make it easier for pilots to read and interpret data quickly, contributing to safer and more efficient flight operations.
